I started weightlifting just over a year ago at lakeside, after making the decision to stop playing football at a high level, due to being diagnosed with hypermobility syndrome at 17years old and was unable to last a full match without pain. I needed something to replace to sport I use to love (football) and something else I could focus on. I didn’t want this condition to effect or get in the way of me being able to do what I love to do.
After going off to university studying strength and Conditioning I found that I was quite strong and was able to increase strength quickly through going to the university Gym. My friend, who is also a weightlifter, also picked this up and she suggested I start Olympic weightlifting.
So, during the summer once back from university I found Lakeside weightlifting and I have not looked back since. I felt very welcome from the start, with everyone being very supportive, friendly and encouraging. I can say it is like having an extended family.
Lizzie is an incredible coach and has help me to push myself to be the best I can, couldn’t thank her enough. Even when going through a hard time with injuries, she has helped to get into British university Championship in April 2019 and looking to get into the British Championship in September 2019. Hoping this will enable me to break into GB weightlifting team. Lizzie has also allowed me to be able develop and learn both as an athlete and a coach, that is vital for what I am studying at university for.
I have found a sport that I love and hope to go far in and finally have reduce joint pain considerable.
Would recommend Lakeside weightlifting to anyone wanting to get into weightlifting as it is the best club to be part of.

At 15 I was diagnosed with hypermobility-syndrome and I was told that excessive activity could cause me problems so I gave up sport and led a very lazy life until I found Lakeside Weightlifting in April 2018 as part of Eastleigh’s “This Girl Can” scheme, after the 7 week beginners course I signed up as a member and I haven’t looked back.

With the fabulous coaching from Lizzie and the support of everyone else at Lakeside I have been able to push myself further than I ever thought possible. Training doesnt feel like a chore as there is always something different to work on and the health benefits massively outweigh the muscle soreness after a hard session.

Lizzie has been incredible as a coach, initially tailoring my individualised programs to support my hobby playing American football, and more recently in her programming and coaching support specific to Olympic weightlifting competitions. I Couldnt ask for more!
In terms of the club, itself – since it opened last winter there has been nothing but an warm and friendly atmosphere to be found and shared by all the members who go. There is a real team spirit and mutual support in the club that spills over into competitions that we attend en masse!
An excellent balance between supporting focused and commited athletes, to being ‘non-intimidating’ to new or more casual members, this includes junior classes where the kids seem to really enjoy the sport and get on well with coaches.

Lizzie has helped me to hugely improve my squats as well as teach me the Olympic lifts. 1-2-1s with her have sorted out some squiffy form issues and she’s beaten my lazy glutes until they actually decided to show up and do some work. My form is drastically better. My Olympic lifts have a long way to go, but the beginner sessions are really friendly (unless we talk too much, then Coach gets mean). She’s a great teacher, supportive coach and it’s a lovely, loud community of likeminded gluttons for punishment. Just don’t let her give you a leg slap before you lift…Hannah Edwins
I come to Lakeside Weightlifting because it’s a fun and a relaxed atmosphere. Everyone is so helpful and you just simply don’t get that in a commercial gym. We also don’t have anyone walking around like they own the place even the owner! She knows it’s a shared place and wouldn’t have it any other way. She provides a service that is very unique but tailor makes each group session to fit not just your skill set but to build you up which helps you achieve your goals. On a personal level Lakeside has become a place that has helped me combat my social anxiety. I still get moments but as long as I train twice a week I barely notice it.

I originally had attended a traditional gym but it was not for me I had Lakeside recommended to me by a friend and haven’t looked back since it’s a real community where the coaches are really friendly and approachable.

I enjoyed the new experience of weightlifting. As I have never tried it before. It really helped me improve my strength and flexibility. I would recommend anybody to try out weightlifting and especially at this gym!Lewis Minns

I first completed the beginners course and although I have played sports at a good level in the past, the instructors knew things I had not come across before.

It might not look much of a difference, but a stone lost in weight, fat lost all over and fitness level massively improved. I thought I was reasonably fit at 50 and went to the gym to do my own stuff, but a ‘Basing Belly’ was slowly pushing the front of my t-shirts.

When I joined the gym I took a free half hour personal trainer session (having never done one before in 20 years of gym). Liz, my trainer, quickly demonstrated her enthusiastic knowledge of exercise, and more importantly, how she could revitalise my stale and limited routines.

I took up her offer for introductory Jumpstart sesssions and ‘enjoyed’ new exercises and routines and solid dietry advice. Weight started falling off immediately (I blame the dietry advice).
When they were completed I was happy to go for the hour sessions, and then Liz could really hit me with the full blast circuits, and full body and fitness assessment.

Wow. Every session is different, hitting your body from every aspect and angle, with your personal goal following Liz’s crafted program.
Of course, it’s all down to how much you put in, but Liz seems to know how to encourage and push you to your beneficial limit (I’m writing this with sore muscles and a good post exercise buzz).

I’m just sorry I haven’t pushed myself harder, but ask Liz, she might think I’ve done OK. It’s just a start. All I have to say is: ” If you really want to get fit, Liz is the Biz.

Before you read any further I must warn you to: Assume the position! Back straight, chest and bum out, weight on your heels and shoulders back! Training with Lizzie is not like a walk in the park. I should know as we have been to the park and there was no time when walking was allowed, just lots of creative ways to get dirty and sweaty!
I have been training with Lizzie since Summer 2012 and in that time I have noticed a significant improvement in my general health as it now takes longer to tire me out and I can only put this down to a sensible combination of cardio work and strength workouts. Lizzie comes up with creative ways to get fit and stay fit and if nothing else you will certainly expand your vocabulary with all the weird and wonderful names of the exercises and routines.

Why am I still training with Lizzie? Because it works… I have improved my overall strength, started to tone up my body and make radical improvements to my vital statistics. I have lost weight, gained muscle mass, reduced body fat and increased my cardio capacity. How do I know this? At the end of each block of sessions we review what has been achieved by comparing start / finish data in the form of fitness tests and physical measurements (scales, tape measures and BP monitors!).

So why should you train with her? If you are looking for someone that will tailor your new health and fitness regime to meet your requirements rather than just follow the latest fad or trend but you also need someone that is supportive and stern enough to give you a kick in the backside and work you hard, to the limit, then choose Lizzie.

My only regret is that I didn’t find her before, but that doesn’t matter any longer, so for anyone that is undecided, give it a go, what have you got to lose? What do you want to gain?

Lizzie is a sadist. She seems to revel in making you sweat buckets and work until you collapse in a soggy heap. I’ve been working with her for a few months now, and I feel so much stronger and fitter. She’s made me exceed my fitness expectations, as well as lose body fat and inches. Training with Lizzie changed the direction I was heading regarding my lifestyle. Having suffered from depression, I lacked energy and motivation but Lizzie helped me to get active, feel positive and see results. I’ve been training with Lakeside Weightlifting since they opened in December 2017 and I am so glad that I took the decision to head out on that cold winter evening, find my way in the dark, across the then building site (we have lights, toilets and a car park now) to get to the garage in Lakeside Country Park which houses what I now refer to as my lifting family.

Lakeside is more than just a ‘gym’, it is a community of people who share a common interest, who support each other in lifting and life and who I am happy to say have become friends.

Powerlifting and Weightlifting helps with more than just physical fitness and strength…it helps with mental health and strength too. Either as somewhere to go and forget about the stresses of the day, enjoy the company and just lift heavy; or in the battle to keep training, to keep turning up and getting your workout done, even though you may not want to at the start. The feeling of achievement in the end gives you that euphoric high.

Don’t get me wrong, it can be tough sometimes, through the winter months it can get pretty chilly (but we just wear extra layers), long days at work, feeling tired, illness, missing more than you catch or just not moving a weight you know two weeks ago you could move… but the support you get from the coaches and your fellow lifters, the self-achievement of keeping at it and coming through the other side, the progress and personal bests outweigh it all!

I had 10 fitness sessions with Lizzie she very quickly got me using the correct techniques and onto the right diet plan to produce my goals. Lizzie monitored me very closely and was also a great motivator.
